Drum'n'bass consisting of J.S. Clayden (vocals, programming), J.A. Carter (guitar, programming), M.D. Clayden (bass), and D. (live drums), British band Pitchshifter started kO'd in the early-'90s industrial subway system as aggressive social confronters hearkening indorse to the early years of British punk sway and American hard-core (à la the Minutemen and Dead Kennedys). The dance orchestra signed to Earache in 1992, and their first base mates releases -- the mini-album Give in (1992) and the full-length Psensitised (1993) -- firm entrenched the band in the industrial resistance and brought their music to the attention of American listeners. Pitchshifter's shows used live computer programming and slides, and further spread head their music in the States, though their confrontational attitude most ensured a lack of commercial airplay. 1996's Documentary byword Pitchshifter starting to outgrow their industrial roots and explore computing auto engineering in an travail to institute their brand of belligerent social and political knowingness to a more mainstream audience. The album is filled with exciting aggression and high-velocity techno breaks that were unusual in commercial music. In accession, Pitchshifter included justify samples at the ending of the CD, and bucked up listeners to "steal" them for their have enjoyment. The band toured unrelentingly and successfully for the following couple historic period, playing with the likes of Korn, Tool, Ministry, and even Girls Against Boys, pitch them to the attendance of American major label DGC, which gestural them in 1997. During this period the banding as well took a musical leap as evidenced by their 1998 handout web.pitchshifter.com, their kickoff on DGC Records. Filled with an edifying combining of stern, punkie breakbeats swerve toward a unequaled sort of sweaty drum'n'bass, the book album is built both on samples and live playing, thanks in component to the accession of guitarist Jim Davies. Pervert followed in mid-2000.

Olympics Media Battle China Syndrome

Following numerous reports that China has imposed restrictions on foreign news media that will impede -- if not prevent -- their coverage of the Olympic Games, officials of the International Olympic Committee charged with coordinating TV, radio and press coverage have begun talks with members of China's organizing committee seeking assurances that broadcasters will have unfettered access to sites in Beijing. The Associated Press on Monday quoted IOC member Kevan Gosper as saying that "some progress" had been made, "but I can't say we are there yet." Chinese officials are apparently concerned that opponents of their country's policies regarding Tibet and Darfur may attempt to stage demonstrations in Beijing during the games in hopes of attracting the attention of the world's news media. Gosper, who is chairman of the IOC press commission, told the AP that he has made it plain to Chinese organizers that journalists must "have the ability of filing live without any censorship." But Kevin Fleck, China manager of Sydney-based Global Vision Networks, a satellite service provider that has contracted to provide satellite feeds for local stations all over the world, told the wire service that he has run into bureaucratic roadblocks. He said he worries that reporters are going to try to get "on the morning show back home and they're not going to be able to do it. And they are going to be angry."

Director JOHN MAYBURY has apologised to Welsh poet DYLAN THOMAS' daughter - after her cameo in upcoming biopic THE EDGE OF LOVE was scrapped.

Aeronwy Thomas, 62, was asked to play a minor role in the big screen story of her poet father's life, which stars British beauties Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller.

However, the film's editors didn't deem the role important enough to make the movie's final cut.

Maybury says, "She was an extra in one of the scenes but unfortunately my editor put her on the cutting room floor. It wasn't me."

The movie is set to premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival later this month (Jun08).

Ashlee Simpson, Bittersweet World

Ashlee Simpson's third album Bittersweet World is the product of more than a year in the studio and collaboration with some heavyweight producers including the omnipresent Timbaland and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes.

Previously known more for headlines – the infamous Saturday Night Live lip-synching fiasco and relationship with Fallout Boy rocker Pete Wentz – than her music, Ashlee's latest project deserves recognition as a credible threat to the work of Britney, Pink and Avril.

Personally speaking, Ashlee's matured since albums one and two, which nevertheless both went multi-platinum and hit the US number one spot. Indeed, she recently married Wentz in an Alice In Wonderland themed ceremony, and is rumoured to be expecting their first child.

Musically she has now come to terms with her market, and has even learned to celebrate it, lyrically proclaiming herself a mischievous "Sunday school girl" and "Little Miss Perfect". The aim was to make a party record of fun songs, and she's certainly achieved that, though the result is a relatively immature product.

The album's collaborators add gravitas. Timbaland stays mostly behind the scenes but pops up on the funky, Missy Elliott-esque Murder. Santogold's Santi White co-wrote Outta My Head alongside Kenna, while Plain White T's singer Tom Higgenson duets with Simpson on single choice, Little Miss Obsessive. This pop-rock power ballad is the album's standout success and deserves to take Ashlee to the forefront of female pop.

No Time For Tears is a stylish lament and the album's one ballad, Never Dream Alone, is perfectly produced to tug at your heartstrings. Yet even on this vocally-focused track, Ashlee's lung power fails to dazzle.

On strong songs she's reminiscent of Britney and Kelly Clarkson, but too often she relies on talk-singing and shouty choruses. She can obviously hold a tune – she is the youngest person ever to play lead role Roxie in Chicago - it's just a shame she never really tests herself. This album will deservedly shunt her into the spotlight, but time will tell whether Ashlee can come through with the vocal power to match her true potential.
